“You’re Anti-Gay Just Like You’re Anti-Everything Else!” — Christian Faith Under (Im)Moral Attack, Part Eight

“You’re Anti-Gay Just Like You’re Anti-Everything Else!” — Christian Faith Under (Im)Moral Attack, Part Eight

Challenge Number Eight: “Anti-this, anti-that, you’re just anti-gay!” (Eighth in a series of ten, from my new book Critical Conversations!) This one often comes in a form like: “You Christians are against sex, against choice, against equality — you just like to be against things. Your beef with LGBT is just more of the same: you’re anti-gay because being ‘anti-‘ is what Christians do best!” This is a distorted view. Sure, Christianity stands against a lot of things. But Christianity is a positive answer, not a negative…

“You’re on the Wrong Side of History!” — — Christian Faith Under (Im)Moral Attack, Part Three

“You’re on the Wrong Side of History!” — — Christian Faith Under (Im)Moral Attack, Part Three

Challenge Number Three: “You’re on the wrong side of history — gay rights is an idea whose time has come.” (Third in a series of ten, from my new book Critical Conversations!) Time keeps marching on. Science and technology move forward. Does that mean everything progresses over time? “You’re Homophobic!” — — Christian Faith Under (Im)Moral Attack, Part Two

Challenge Number Two: “You’re homophobic.” (Second in a series of ten, from my new book Critical Conversations!) A phobia is a pathologically irrational fear or aversion to something. In this usage “phobia” functions as a highly stigmatized, medicalized term. Simply being opposed to something doesn’t mean you have an irrational fear of it. In this case that vague word “something” really fits, since the prefix “homo” in “homophobic” is never clearly defined. Does it mean fear of gay or lesbian men or women? Aversion…

“You’re a Hater” — — Christian Faith Under (Im)Moral Attack, Part One

Series Introduction (First in a series of ten, from my new book Critical Conversations!) Gay activists set out almost 30 years ago to make Christianity look immoral and wrong. In one key document they even called it a plan for “Overhauling Straight America.” (I tell that story briefly in Critical Conversations: A Christian Parents’ Guide to Discussing Homosexuality With Teens.) It’s been a moral attack delivered from an immoral basis: hence the title of this series. Their idea was to cause believers to cower…
