John Horgan, by no means a religious believer, doesn’t take Hawking very seriously:
Cosmic Clowning: Stephen Hawking’s “new” theory of everything is the same old CRAP
While I’m at it with Scientific American, I beg to differ with “Undifferentiated Ethics: Why Stem Cells from Adult Skin Are as Morally Fraught as Embryonic Stem Cells.” There are significant moral issues there, which I appreciate being brought to our attention. Human cloning is one, and it’s a big one. But it’s still not killing innocent young humans.

I admit, one of my first thoughts with Hawking is that the man is first and foremost about publicity.
Missed this post earlier. I think Hawkings is very much serious. I also think that Hawkings has opened up an incredible opportunity. As probably the world’s most famous scientist he has pulled back the veil and revealed that science is really not anti miraculous. Anyone but an atheist will see that his concept of ex nihilo is not much different than the biblical concept of the same minus his assumption of non intelligent law.
I am surprised and somewhat saddened that the response from the church has not seized the opportunity.
You know what, Michael Anthony?
I agree with you. And I think the loss of that opportunity (not by everyone – some very keen bloggers I know made the same point) should stir a moment of reflection from apologists.
