"For this reason . . . I have sent them you, my only son."

Question: to whom does this refer?

"Even though you've been raised as a human being, you are not one of them . . . . They can be a great people, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you, my only son."

Superman Rising This is a direct quote from the Superman Returns trailer. The allusion to Jesus Christ could hardly be accidental.

The "only son" has been sent to bring salvation to humanity. Based just on this trailer and on observations of modern culture, we can well imagine (tentatively, until we see the movie) what this is hinting at. It sounds a lot like a modern myth of salvation, based not on humanity's need for rescue from sin but on "their capacity for good." In my last post I referred to a secular materialist view of evil; this is more of a New Age approach. It is, perhaps, the most popular theme in modern mythology: we're just fine, if only we get a little tweaking done on us, if we only grasp some light.

The theme wasn't so common in ancient Greek and Roman myths--possibly because they had a better grasp of who we humans really are. It takes a serious set of blinders on our eyes to accept it today. It inverts the Biblical understanding of mankind, by which we know that Good Friday was really necessary. Jesus was not an invulnerable bearer of light; he was himself the Light of the World, who suffered among us and died for us.

The plot synopsis for the movie sounds fairly innocuous, but the trailer certainly purveys a false messiah.

By the way, I did omit one giveaway word from the quote. Here's the whole thing (the ellipsis is for a wordless sequence of dramatic visuals):

"Even though you've been raised as a human being, you are not one of them . . . . They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you, my only son."
