Give me the COFFEE and No One Gets Hurt

January 10th 2008

Give Me the Coffee

Sometimes on Sunday mornings, standing in line for coffee in our church fellowship hall, I tell the people in front of me, “You sure are brave to be standing between me and that coffee!” So even though it’s not a terribly Christian sentiment, I like this sign anyway:

“Give me the COFFEE and no one gets hurt.”

It’s good for a smile, as they say.

The sign is on the wall of our favorite coffee stop, Harbor Café in Newport News, VA. It’s in an office building, not easy to find, but well worth the search. Starbucks doesn’t hold a candle to it!

(Cell phone photo–low quality, but you get the idea anyway)

Rewriting the Hymns

January 2nd 2008

Touchstone Magazine Blog’s Hymn Parodies:

All too true. Hilarious!–but all too sadly true of some parts of modern “churchianity.” They’re calling for more of the same to be posted on their blog now, so watch this new page for more.

Here’s How It Came Out

December 22nd 2007

Tom's Tea-RingYou can look but–too bad–you can’t taste! I said before that this was a Norwegian tea-ring. In some cookbooks it’s called a Swedish tea-ring, but I don’ think the Swedes knew our family’s secret ingredient. That’s what we like to think, at least.

Two Half-Miles!

December 21st 2007

I’ve had some time off from the office this week. That’s what I needed to be able to do something I haven’t done since I was half this age–swim a mile. Well, two half-miles, actually, and then some. I did 1000 yards on Wednesday and 900 this morning. At least it was all in one week. I’m pretty pleased with it, if I may say so myself–not bad for a 51-year-old.

Back in my mid-20s I did a mile swim once. Now I’m thinking I might be able to do it again before long.

Norwegian Tea-RingThis afternoon I’m doing some baking, another hobby of mine. The Norwegian tea-ring dough is rising as I write this. This is a real family holiday tradition that goes back as far as I can remember and then some.

When it’s done it should look something like this. Maybe I’ll put up a real picture of the one I’ve baked when it’s done. (Update 12/22: here it is.)

Dog Stained Glass Clocks

December 15th 2007

Dog Stained Glass Clocks

Our family was gathered in the kitchen/dining area of our home, doing some general cleanup. The others became quite concerned when they heard me cry out, “This is just awful!” I was looking at this ad, which came with this month’s Reader’s Digest: “Dog Stained Glass Clocks.” Once I showed them what I was looking at, we all had a good laugh together.

Somebody at the Danbury Mint needs a better copy editor.

It reminds me of another instance of the same kind of error, which we saw on a sign in front of a motel in Daytona Beach. (We’ve wondered just what this establishment’s hiring policies are.)

Moral of the story: it always pays to re-read your work.

Brittany Spears and Whitney Houston: College Basketball Teammates

December 7th 2007

Yes it’s true! Spears plays guard, and Houston is a forward for Colorado. Nothing made up here. Check it out for yourself!

This was funnier when I heard it on the radio, where “Brittany” sounded just like “Britney.” It’s still good for a laugh, anyway.
