Mid-Course Re-EvaluationEvery once in a while, even when doing something
you enjoy, it's time to ask "what am I trying to accomplish here?" I'm at that
stage right now in regard to blogging--it's time to re-consider my
purposes.
My other responsibilities have increased
considerably over the past few months, and I've already slowed my pace of
postings because of that. Then I realized today, too, that I'm putting a great
deal of energy into countering opinions that, as far as I know, only one person
holds. I'm referring to doctor(logic)'s logical positivism and his obstinate
epistemology of predictiveness. I realize other readers share some of his belief
set, but with him in particular there is a definite sense of spinning wheels,
which may not be relevant to many
people.
There's a lot to be learned even from exchanges like I've had with him; I've had to brush up on my epistemology this weekend, for one thing. The question, though, is whether I'm really on track with what I set out to do here, and whether that track should change. One change is already in the works for the fall: I'll be leading a class in church on "Objections to Christianity," and I intend to use the blog to help us all explore and test some of those ideas. Those of you who object to Christianity will have your opportunity to contribute! And there may be a way to bring in other readers as virtual class members. We'll have to see how that would work. I've found that the most widely regarded work I've done has been in taking a long, careful look at a specific challenge--like Barbara Forrest, for example, and some of the responses I've published to ID objections in the press. I may want to turn more in that direction. I'm not getting enough time to read, though, so I don't feel as fresh in my writing. I'm also considering starting another blog focused on the rest of my "day job," in the area of strategy and effectiveness for missions and ministry. And I'm trying to find time to focus on getting some things published in print. I may adopt a policy of spending less time responding to comments. All kinds of possibilities are out there. Here's the plan for the short run: I'm going to continue here as normal for about another week or so, and then I'm going to take a blog sabbatical for a while to pray and think these things through. It would help me if you could provide me some feedback before next week: comments, suggestions, ideas, things that have or have not been interesting, etc. You can leave a public comment or send an email. A blog like this is kind of a community, after all, in a weird, online sort of way. I appreciate my readers a lot, and you could help me a lot in this process that way. Thanks!
