Mystery of the Day: Mailboxes

Mailboxes
Our local post office, like many others, has two drive-up mailboxes next to each other, as shown in this ever-so-lovely photo I took with my cell phone.

First Pluto, and now (sob!)...

... They've killed Saturn!

"Saturn, ... R.I.P.," it says.

The RSS feed headline was, "G.M. Quietly Kills Saturn." Apparently it wasn't enough to demote it like Pluto.

What A Great Day for Football!

My alma mater, Michigan State University, won big in football today, 55-18 over University of Alabama, Birmingham. But that wasn't the big story at our house. My wife is a graduate of Appalachian State University, which today won what Coach Lou Holtz on ESPN called the biggest upset he's seen in college football. They took a 34-32 victory over number 5-ranked University of Michigan (also known simply as "Michigan," for those who don't know). Now you have to understand--Appalachian State has won their division championship two years in a row, but still, they don't even play in the same league as Michigan. ESPN says it's the first time a ranked Division 1-A team has ever been beaten by a Division 1-AA team.*

Not So Smart Spammer

If you get enough spam messages, you've discovered how spammers will use unexpected, possibly random words, in their "From" and "Subject" lines to fool your spam-catcher or to fool you into thinking it's for real. I got one today that made me wonder just how dumb they think we all are. It was from... "Invite Hacker!"

We're thinking people here, right? We like to learn new things, don't we? Well, here's something new you can learn about your computer: a never-before-revealed, magnified image that shows how your mouse pointer knows where to go on the screen.smile

Shark Bites Aquarium Curator. Shark Dies.

There's some backwards news for you!

"The shark that bit a Virginia Aquarium curator on Friday died a few hours after the incident, the museum announced today."

The shark was "not wounded in the incident," and the cause of death is unknown. Honest. At least that's what our local Daily Press is reporting.

"Smokers Drive Up Cost of Bibles"

My first response was probably the same as yours: Huh? But there's an actual economic connection there, specifically to Bibles. Who would've thunk it?

Unexpected Treat (?) For Our Visitors From Michigan

It's the day before Easter here in southeastern Virginia, we have family visiting here from Michigan to get an early taste of spring, and this morning we woke up to an inch of snow on the ground. It's the best snow we've had all winter--I mean--oh, what season is it, anyway?

Record Ratio

This is a record ratio for this blog: The Putting Faith To the Test blog entry on February 2 was all of 21 words long, counting the title--one of my shortest. The comments following it stand at over 62,000 words so far. That's almost 3,000 words of comment for every one in the blog entry. I had no idea what that post was going to kick up!

A Macintosh Thing?

Here's something unexpected: since I moved to a new server and new web statistics early in December, 38% of visits to this blog have been from Macintosh computers. That's a lot more than Apple's market share would predict it to be.
