Merry Eatspendday!Someone at World Magazine
blog has come up with a new name for The Holiday That Must Not Be
Named:
Eatspendday,
preceded by
Eatspendtide.
I'm filing this under "Just For Fun," because it's
hilarious in spite of its terribly sad side. It takes the hyper-commercialism of
Christmas almost all the way to its logical conclusion. Almost. To get
all the
way there, you have to use the other name also mentioned there at WorldMagBlog:
Amazon.com is calling it "Gifting Season." If they had called it "Giving
Season," that might be a pretty healthy name for it--one of the healthier sides
of Christmas has been that it has encouraged people to think about giving. But
"Gifting Season," coming as it does from a major retailer, is too blatantly
about buying stuff.
Reports are that "Christmas" has made a bit of a comeback this year. It has at WalMart, and also in our local school district. I just hope that Christians don't think it was ever under serious threat, because the aspect of Christmas that really counts is plenty robust and durable. The trappings and PR may come and go, but none of that can change what Jesus Christ did for us, starting that night in the stable. Posted: Wed - December 13, 2006 at 09:46 PM | |
