Glorifying God Through Jazz

I was originally a musician, so I really enjoyed Kevin Twit's Breakpoint article on Glorifying God Through Jazz.

Improvisation was always hard for me--I enjoyed playing in big bands and engineering jazz recordings, but I didn't have the quick responses to be a jazz soloist. Still, I learned a lifelong appreciation for jazz.

In the paragraph titled, "Jazz shows us our need for roots and wings," I thought that title was going to be about the form of jazz. Improvisation is incredibly free and loose, but it can only be so when the rhythm section is absolutely solid and secure, especially the drums and bass. I once played in a band with a drummer who couldn't keep steady time, and it was nothing but an uneasy struggle for the rest of us--no fun at all. A solid beat provides the roots for complex rhythms in the rest of the band, and for improvisation.

Twit does allude to that briefly, later in the article under another heading.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." The secure foundation we have in Christ makes such freedom possible.
