Backlog

The comments have been so unexpectedly active, I have a backlog of things I've been wanting to write about: three books I've been reading, and the real reason I believe in Jesus Christ.

Starting with the last of these, it's nothing contradictory to what I've been thinking and writing all along. It's something that ties it all together in a way that has been swimming beneath the surface of my mind, and which has recently surfaced. It ties a lot of themes together. I've been trying to find time to get it written down

Meanwhile I've been reading:

A Bethany House book, Revival God's Way, by Leonard Ravenhill

Victor Reppert's excellent book on the Argument From Reason (which I should have read a long time ago), C.S. Lewis's Dangerous Idea.

And Alister McGrath's pre-God Delusion book on Richard Dawkins, Dawkins' God: Genes, Memes, and the Meaning of Life. I'm going to cover this one quickly. It's a great book, an outstanding book. If I weren't tired of talking about Richard Dawkins, I would go into all the things I appreciate about it. He tackles Dawkins's primary anti-religion themes, and brings sense where nonsense has been standing up and shouting.

I should mention at least that McGrath has an unusual platform from which to speak: he's an Oxford-educated Ph.D. in biophysics, who, in the course of his science studies, recognized the truth of the God of the universe, and turned from his atheism to belief in Jesus Christ. He picked up another doctorate, in theology, and is now an Oxford professor in that field.

To Richard Dawkins, that's entirely backward. Dawkins's book on religion has been almost universally panned, however, by theist, atheist, and the uninvolved. McGrath's on the other hand, is responsible and well-reasoned. So if Richard Dawkins is on your mind--and I'm ready to get him off of mine--I recommend this book to you.

I still also highly recommend McGrath's The Twilight of Atheism.
