Correction

I wrote something misleading in my last post today:

"The Bible recognizes that humans face plenty of obstacles to doing what is right, including inborn obstacles, which is why we need God's help."

That's true as far as it goes, but if it implies that the reason we need God is so that we can do right, that's wrong. We need God because he created us for relationship with him. Just as Adam and Eve needed each other while they were yet unfallen, they were made to relate to God before then. Relationship--love--is at the heart of what God intended for us, and the first relationship is with him. Living in a way that reflects God's character (doing what is right) is an outflow of relationship with him.

This is too often misunderstood, which is one reason I regret adding to the confusion earlier! God doesn't tell us to clean up our act so we can come to him, so that we can please him. He calls on us to accept Christ's gift of forgiveness and righteousness. Once we accept that, he works in us, from the inside out, to draw us closer to him, including the way we live our lives. It's part of his great gift to us.
