It's Just What?!

I saw this t-shirt today in the airport, worn by (of course) a man: "Relax, It's Just Sex."

That is about the best four-word summary I know of for what's wrong with today's view of sexual morality. This view of sex is not just wrong; it's grievously weak.

God's word tells us that extra-marital sex is wrong. It's for good reason. I'll illustrate with a story that relates very closely to this t-shirt slogan.

I was in a youth meeting at church, where one of the teen girls said, "I don't know what's wrong with kissing, I mean, it's no big deal!" Our culture does an extremely contradictory thing: it makes sex no big deal, in that it's just an act of physical pleasure; but it plasters it everywhere in the media, it makes it virtually a requirement of passage that kids lose their virginity very young, it never lets sex escape our awareness.

But hey, relax. It's just sex, isn't it?

My response to that teenaged girl is the same I would say to the man in the airport. "I feel very sorry for you if that's how it seems to you. You're draining the life out of something that is incredibly rich and meaningful. Every kiss I share with my wife is a big deal. Why would I ever want it not to be?"

Sex is intended for pleasure and so much more. It creates a bond of transparency, vulnerability, mutual caring, and commitment that has no parallel elsewhere. It is the way we share in creating families, uniting our flesh and blood in the next generation. Saving sex for marriage makes an incredible foundation for mutual trust, the most crucial ingredient for a lasting relationship. Sure, it can be difficult to wait, but that increases its value in the long run--we value more what we work harder for.

If it's "just sex," it's missing most of the real value.
