[edit: upon re-reading the post I think this may not actually be an answer to the intended question... nonetheless, I've already typed it.]
Moreland has talked about this explosion and attributes it to :

A major factor in the current revival in the Third World - by some estimates, up to 70 percent of it - is intimately connected to signs and wonders as expressions fo the love of the Christian Father-God, the lordship of his Son, and the power of his Spirit and his Kingdom. A manifestation of the supernatural power of God through healings, demonic deliverances, and the prophetic are central to what is going on today. Jenkins goes so far as to say that for Third World Christians and the explosive growth of the church in their communities, the heart of the matter is "the critical idea that God intervenes daily in everyday life," an intervention that is an expression of the power of God's Kingdom.

He notes that the underground church in China has 100 million believers, as opposed to the 70 million members of the Communist Party.

"We are currently living through one of the transforming movements in the history of religion worldwide" The church is exploding in unprecedented rates in the so-called Third World.
...
Christianity is a social revolution of staggering proportions.

Good question.

It was a borrowed book, and I don't have it available now, or else I would look through it for more of an answer.

He explained it in terms of the strength of conservative theology. There were a large number of other particular explanations, but that was the overriding one. I wouldn't want to overstate even that, though. He did more describing than explaining.
